Permutation codes, source coding and a generalisation of Bollobás-Lubell-Yamamoto-Meshalkin and Kraft inequalities

چکیده
We develop a general framework to prove Krafttype inequalities for prefix-free permutation codes for source coding with various notions of permutation code and prefix. We also show that the McMillan-type converse theorem in most of these cases does not hold, and give a general form of a counterexample. Our approach is more general and works for other structures besides permutation codes. The classical Kraft inequality for prefix-free codes as well as results about permutation codes follow as corollaries of our main theorem and main counterexample.

Probabilistic Methods in Combinatorics
Remark. This is also known as the Lubell-Yamamoto-Meshalkin inequality. Solution: Generate a random permutation σ = (x1, . . . , xM ) of [M ]. Let each Ei be the event that the set Ai appears as the initial segment of σ, i.e., that {x1, . . . , xai} = Ai. Since none of the Ai contain each other, the Ei are mutually exclusive. But each P [Ei] = ( M ai )−1 , so the LHS is P [∪Ei], and probabiliti...

More detailed information about the s t ructure of Sperner families can be obtained by considering their level sequences. The level sequence of a family 4 , f ( ~ ) = {fi(Y)}, has f i (~) equal to the number of members of ~ with exac t ly ' / e l emen t s . Sperner 's theorem asserts tha t ~fi(2~)<_ ([~j) . A stronger restriction on the level i sequence was proved independent ly by Lubell, Yama...
متن کاملQuantization Using Permutaton Codes with a Uniform Source
Permutation coding is a block coding/quantization scheme where the codebook is comprised entirely of permutations of a single starting vector. Permutation codes for the uniform source are developed using a simple algorithm. The performance of these codes is compared against scalar codes and permutation codes developed by different methodologies. It is shown that the algorithm produces codes as ...
متن کاملMILP models and valid inequalities for the two-machine permutation flowshop scheduling problem with minimal time lags
In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling on two-machine permutation flowshop with minimal time lags between consecutive operations of each job. The aim is to find a feasible schedule that minimizes the total tardiness. This problem is known to be NP-hard in the strong sense. We propose two mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models and two types of valid inequalities which aim t...
متن کاملThe multivariate signed Bollobás-Riordan polynomial
Ribbon graphs are surfaces with boundary together with a decomposition into a union of closed topological discs of two types, edges and vertices. These sets are subject to some natural axioms recalled in section 2.1. For such a generalisation of the usual graphs, B. Bollobás and O. Riordan found a topological version of the Tutte polynomial [3, 4]. In the following, we will refer to this genera...
